AB The  mediastinum  may  be  the  site  of  a  variety  of  neoplastic  (Chapter  82)  and  nonneoplastic  disorders.  In  this  chapter,  we  first  describe  the  anatomy  of  the  mediastinum,  including  its  boundaries,  compartments,  and  distribution  of  lymphatics.  We  then  consider  the  important  clinical  entities  of  pneumomediastinum,  acute  mediastinitis,  and  chronic  mediastinitis  before  concluding  with  a  discussion  of  spontaneous  mediastinal  hemorrhage.
