AB ESSENTIALS  OF  DIAGNOSISPrompt  diagnostic  imaging  is  essential  in  any  woman  with  a  palpable  dominant  breast  mass,  regardless  of  age.Ultrasound  is  the  initial  test  of  choice  for  women  under  the  age  of  30  years.Between  the  ages  of  30  and  39  years,  ultrasound  is  the  preferred  initial  imaging  modality,  although  diagnostic  mammography  or  digital  breast  tomosynthesis  may  be  considered  in  the  setting  of  a  concerning  clinical  examination  or  significant  risk  factors.For  women  over  the  age  of  40  years,  diagnostic  mammography  with  or  without  ultrasonography  or  digital  breast  tomosynthesis  are  the  preferred  imaging  modalities.
