The abuse can be physical, sexual, or emotional and can include economic deprivation. Although anyone can experience intimate partner violence, women are more likely than men to be impacted by intimate partner violence; lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning persons experience higher rates of intimate partner violence than other groups. Regardless of the type of abuse, the goal of the abuser is to gain control over the victim. Intimate partner violence is common but is often not diagnosed. There is also concern for an increase in intimate partner violence during the isolation of the COVID-19 pandemic.
