AB Normal  plasma  magnesium  concentration  is  1.7–2.1  mg/dL  (0.7–0.85  mmol/L).  Similar  to  calcium,  only  the  ionized  form  is  metabolically  active.  The  primary  source  of  magnesium  excretion  is  via  the  kidney.  Magnesium’s  physiologic  effects  on  the  nervous  system  resemble  those  of  calcium.
