The anemia is intravascular, producing hemoglobinemia, hemoglobinuria and, in severe cases, methemalbuminemia. The hallmark of the disorder is the finding of fragmented red blood cells (schistocytes, helmet cells) on the peripheral blood smear (eFigure 13–17).
