Examination of the throat reveals edema and erythema of the posterior pharynx and tonsils are often covered with gray-white exudates. The anterior cervical lymph nodes are tender. Gastrointestinal symptoms of nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain may also be present, especially in children.
