AB As  we  prepare  the  eighth  edition  of  this  book,  the  trajectories  of  demography  and  geriatrics  seem  to  be  moving  in  opposite  directions.  Just  as  the  baby  boom  is  producing  a  bumper  crop  of  older  persons,  geriatrics  has  encountered  serious  problems  in  recruiting  participants  from  either  medicine  or  nursing.  If  ever  there  was  a  time  when  health-care  providers  with  expertise  in  the  care  of  older  adults  were  needed,  it  is  now.
