AB Paracentesis  is  a  procedure  that  removes  ascitic  fluid  from  the  abdominal  cavity  with  a  needle  or  a  catheter.  A  diagnostic  paracentesis  may  determine  the  cause  of  ascites  and  rule  out  spontaneous  bacterial  peritonitis.  A  therapeutic  paracentesis  will  remove  excess  fluid.
