PY - 2014 T2 - Clinical Genomics: Practical Applications in Adult Patient Care AB - Disease summary:Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a complex genetic disorder, involving the interaction of multiple genetic loci with environmental factors.MetS consists of three of the five following criteria: increased waist circumference (Table 12-1); triglyceride (TG) level greater than or equal to 150 mg/dL (1.7 mmol/L) or drug treatment for elevated TG; high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-C) less than 40 mg/dL (1 mmol/L) in males or less than 50 mg/dL (1.3 mmol/L) in females or drug treatment for reduced HDL-C level; systolic blood pressure (SBP) greater than or equal to 130 mm Hg and/or diastolic blood pressure (DBP) greater than or equal to 85 mm Hg or antihypertensive drug treatment in a patient with a history of elevated blood pressure (BP); fasting glucose greater than or equal to 100 mg/dL (5.6 mmol/L) or drug treatment for elevated glucose.Individuals with MetS have a twofold increased risk for cardiovascular disease (CVD) and fivefold increased risk for type 2 diabetes (DM2) compared to individuals without MetS.
