TY - CHAP M1 - Book, Section TI - Alcohols A1 - Katzung, Bertram G. A1 - Kruidering-Hall, Marieke A1 - Trevor, Anthony J. PY - 2019 T2 - Katzung & Trevor's Pharmacology: Examination & Board Review, 12e AB - Ethanol, a sedative-hypnotic drug, is the most important alcohol of pharmacologic interest. It has few medical applications, but its abuse causes major medical and socioeconomic problems. A very large fraction of fatal automobile accidents are associated with driving under the influence (DUI). Other alcohols of toxicologic importance include methanol and ethylene glycol. Several important drugs discussed in this chapter are used to prevent the potentially life-threatening ethanol withdrawal syndrome, to treat chronic alcoholism, or to treat acute methanol and ethylene glycol poisoning.
