PY - 2018 T2 - Vander’s Renal Physiology, 9e AB - In this newest edition of Vander’s Renal Physiology, named for Arthur Vander who authored the first five editions many years ago, we approached the task with the same aims as set out in the most recent editions. Those aims are to describe the remarkable workings of the kidneys through carefully worded text and schematic diagrams, using language and concepts that help the reader gain an intuitive grasp of the content. The text stresses two things: the goals of renal processes, to provide context for a given renal activity, and the logic behind renal processes, with attention given to aspects that experience tells us are sticking points for students. As a result the text includes considerable background material that goes beyond strictly renal mechanisms. As any reader of the literature soon discovers, much kidney research today delves deeper and deeper into the intracellular signaling pathways that control renal actions. While this literature is fascinating to read, it is often difficult to place detailed signaling events in the context of overall renal function. Therefore we have focused our coverage on the processes that these intracellular signaling pathways control, while limiting coverage of signaling pathways per se. We revised all sections of the text to bring them up to date. We reworded explanations to make them as logical and clear as possible. This includes replacing or revising several figures. We have provided several aids to help the reader. Each chapter includes a list of key concepts with indicators in the text where those concepts are presented. There are boxed statements scattered throughout the text to help emphasize major points. And there are study questions at the end of each chapter, with an answer key and explanations of the answers at the end of the book.
