Of all newborns, 2 to 3 percent have a major congenital abnormality detectable at birth (Cragan, 2009; Dolk, 2010). Some medications undoubtedly pose significant risk to the developing embryo or fetus (Table 8-1). However, 80 percent of birth defects do not have an obvious etiology, and of those with an identified cause, nearly 95 percent of cases have chromosomal or genetic origins (Feldkamp, 2017). The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) (2018) estimates that <1 percent of all birth defects are caused by medications (Fig. 8-1).
