This represents a common source of many infections.Contributing factors: immunosuppression, atopic dermatitis, preexisting tissue injury, and inflammation.Local manifestations include: folliculitis, furunculosis, ecthyma, and impetigo.Systemic reactions include: staphylococcal toxic shock syndrome and scarlatiniform eruption. Not particularly localized to one anatomic area.Pathology: abundant neutrophilic infiltration admixed with lymphocytes.Treatment: topical, oral, or parenteral antibiotics; change predisposing conditions, if possible. When planning therapy, consider local and current antimicrobial resistance patterns.
