TY - CHAP M1 - Book, Section TI - Acknowledgments A1 - Burgin, Susan PY - 2021 T2 - Guidebook to Dermatologic Diagnosis AB - I would like to thank my mentors. Professor Joy Schulz, your lessons are indelible. Dr. Michael Fisher, this book is an extension of all that you taught me and my gift back to you. To all my other teachers and colleagues and also to the residents and students I have taught over the years, thank you. You all have taught and inspired me. You've challenged me to think through new knowledge and concept areas. I feel privileged and proud to have been a part of many great institutions over the years—the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa; New York University (NYU) and the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York; and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston. To my dermatology teachers at the University of Witwatersrand in South Africa—Professor Deepak Modi and Drs. Richard Nevin, David Klevansky, Hansa Ratanjee, Vivian Berro, Vivian Jacques, and Rob Weiss—your love of dermatology and your knowledge are with me still. Professor Modi, thank you too for your image contributions to the Guidebook. To my co-registrar group in South Africa—Drs. Steven Glassman, Eric Bue, Jacques Malan, Barbara Fine, and Pholile Mpofu—you were phenomenal teachers. Warm South African gratitude also goes to my esteemed colleague, Professor Ncoza Dlova. Thank you for your image contributions to this book, and for your inspiration, dear friendship, and our ongoing work together. In 1996, Dr. Irwin Freedberg, the chair of dermatology at the Ronald O Perelman Department of Dermatology of NYU, changed my life's course when I was asked to become a senior resident there. I subsequently completed a full second dermatology residency in the Division of Dermatology at Einstein, where Dr. Fisher was the chair. Dr. Freedberg, Dr. Fisher, and the faculty, residents, and students of NYU and of Einstein embraced me as a colleague and teacher. Dr. Miguel Sanchez, thank you for allowing the inclusion of images from the patients we saw at the time. Dr. Ken Katz, I will always remember when you were a first-year resident and you told me that you had just diagnosed a new case of in-transit melanoma metastases based on what you learned in my class only a few days prior. Thanks also go to my co-residents at Einstein for some wonderful shared years. You helped to make New York City my home. To Dr. Andrea Cambio, thank you for your unwavering friendship. To Dr. Barry Smith, thank you for your image contribution. To Dr. Todd Minars, thank you being one of the first to want to read this book. I hope your patience will now finally be rewarded.
