Unfortunately, pancreatic cancer is projected to be the second leading cause of death from cancer in the United States by 2030. Worldwide pancreatic cancer is the eleventh most common cancer with 338,000 new patients diagnosed and >334,000 deaths (seventh cause of cancer deaths). Pancreatic cancer currently has the worst survival rate of any cancer with an overall 5-year survival (regardless of stage) of ~8.2%. However, that situation is changing because some advances have been made against the disease with some improvements in survival (see below) that may affect the 5-year survival statistics. In particular, knowledge about specific molecular subsets of the disease has become crucial so that one can provide the best possible care for their patients with pancreatic cancer.
