Key Features

  • One of a diverse group of eosinophilic pulmonary syndromes

  • Seen predominantly in women

Clinical Findings

  • Fever, night sweats, and weight loss

  • Dyspnea

  • Asthma present in 50% of cases

Diagnosis

  • Chest radiograph with peripheral infiltrates

  • Peripheral eosinophilia

  • Bronchoalveolar lavage to document eosinophils in the lung and exclude other causes

  • Lung biopsy may be required

Treatment

  • Oral prednisone (1 mg/kg/day) for 1–2 weeks and tapered over many months usually results in dramatic improvement

  • Most patients require 10–15 mg prednisone every other day for 1 year or longer to prevent relapses
