Key Features

  • An acute or chronic pulmonary disorder related to beryllium exposure

  • Exposure occurs in machining and handling of beryllium products and alloys; beryllium miners are not at risk

Clinical Findings

  • Acute berylliosis is a serious ulcerative tracheobronchitis and chemical pneumonitis after intense, severe exposure

  • Chronic berylliosis is a more common, systemic disease resembling sarcoidosis


  • History of exposure to beryllium

  • The beryllium lymphocyte proliferation test is a useful diagnostic test


  • Avoid exposure to beryllium
