More than 42 million binge drinkers, 11.5 million heavy drinkers, and 13 million illicit drug users are employed in the United States. Nearly 10 million adult US workers meet the diagnostic criteria for substance use disorders. Alcohol is the most widely abused substance; whereas marijuana and opioid analgesics are the most widely used illicit drugs. The cost of substance abuse in the United States is staggering. Most of these costs are due to lost productivity, including $161 billion of lost productivity due to alcohol and $120 billion due to illicit drugs.
